Saint John Island April 2013

We finally took some real vacation.  Erma pointed me in the right direction.  If you need advice about the islands, she's been to all of them.   Mike, Grammy, and Mimi Susan held down the fort while we finally got out of the contiguous US for a few days.  I never even once had a meltdown about not knowing exactly what was happening in Braselton!  The baby was in good shape and so was Premier when we got back!  And now I have been to the Caribbean.  It was worth the wait.  We had a truly wonderful time.  The water is everything that you see in pictures, our villa was amazing, and I found out Kelley has no trouble driving on the left side of the road.
Rainbow over Fish Bay from out villa

Cruz Bay ("town") at Sunset on first night on the island.
The view from our villa, "Little Palm Vista".  St. John doesn't have street names or numbers, so every house is named.  If asked, you just tell people which bay your house is on or over.

View from villa.  Next time I'll be checking out this white and blue house.  I could pretend that I'm on a Greek island there.

View from Little Palm toward St. Croix.

Beach

Beach, looking at beach belonging to one of the resorts

I love the huge palm trees that create this amazing shade.  It's quite cozy (read: not hot as blue blazes like it often is "at the beach").

Island view.  Yep...It's like that all the time.

You will notice the bug bites.  The first night we left the villa door open, which was really wonderful and cozy...then the bugs heard about it.

View toward British Virgin Islands.  The big island is Tortola.

On Cinnamon Beach an iguana hung out with us.

All of the cabs are Ford Trucks with seats in the bed.  I'm convinced that, with gas at more that $5/gallon, Ford is subsidizing the truck taxis on St. Thomas and St. John.

Tsunami warning sign

Chickens are everywhere, as well as goats and donkeys on some parts of the island.

Coming in to port from a scuba diving trip.  We had to go back through customs.  The TSA people are much friendlier in St. John than in Miami.

Passing a ferry crossing the water from St. Thomas to St. John

On our day out our boat captain took us to Norman Island BVI, which is home of the Treasure Island legend.  We had lunch at the Pirates Bite, tasty West Indian fare.

Just Van Dyke, another BVI.  Most of our discussions with our boat captain were about what these huge sail boats cost new and used.  I think we'll just keep renting a boat for now.

The water really is this color.

We are getting in and out of the water snorkeling, starting to rain.

View of Fish Bay from our villa.  Obviously, I looks a little like a fish.

More rainbow.

Hazy on our snorkeling day, but the water is always clear.  You can see clear to the bottom in 20 feet of water.
